Changing Engine Oil & Filters |
||
| How do I change the oil and oil filter in my
car? Changing your engine oil yourself is not complicated, but should be left to someone with general knowledge of cars. It is recommended that you change your oil filter with every oil change, so we will include these instructions as well. The typical charge for an oil change is around $20-$30 and takes about 15 minutes. If you feel comfortable doing this you can save some money. An incorrect change could cause damage to your car's engine. Follow these steps: Tip: Oil and filter changes are recommended every 3,000 - 5,000 miles. Supply List: - 6-8 quarts of engine oil - 1 oil filter - a pan for capturing the oil currently in the engine - a funnel makes pouring new oil into the engine - some rags for clean up - a socket set or wrenches for removing the oil pan plug - an oil filter wrench (not required but helpful) - somewhere certified to dispose of the old oil Instructions: 1. The engine should be cool. Leave idle for 30 minutes (recommended). 2. First you need to get under the car and locate the oil pan plug/bolt. 3. Place the pan under the bolt (pan should be able to hold 6-8 quarts liquid). 4. Remove the plug/bolt with the proper fitting socket or wrench. 5. Allow a few minutes for all oil to drain from the engine into the pan. 6. Once empty, remove pan and re-insert the plug/bolt securely. 7. Locate the oil filter and unsrew it. 8. Take the new oil filter and rub a thin layer of new oil around the seal. 9. Screw the new oil filter into place. 10. Remove the engine cap from the top of the engine. 11. Pour 4 quarts of oil into the engine using a funnel if necessary. 12. Check the oil level using the dipstick. 13. Continue adding oil and checking level until the "FULL" line is reached. 14. Once you reach the "FULL" line, re-insert the engine cap. 15. Start engine and allow it to run for a minute or two. 16. Allow to sit for about 15 minutes and check level again. 17. Make a note of the mileage on the car and the amount of oil it took to fill. Things To Note: • If your oil level is near or below the "Low" line, add oil until "Full". • If your oil is black or dark in color, it is probably time for an oil change. • Check owner's manuals or with an auto parts sales person for which oil to use. • If your oil level drops quickly (daily, weekly) you may have a leak or your engine may be burning oil. Have a technician take a look. |
