Checking Engine Oil

Back to Car Care Index
How do I check the oil in my car?
Checking your engine oil can save you hundreds and maybe thousands on costly engine repairs. If you perform this simple 5 minute check often you can keep an eye on how your car is performing and ensure its longevity.

Tip: It is recommended that you change your oil and oil filter every 3,000-5,000 miles for best engine life and performance.

Instructions:

  1. Leave the car off for at least 15 minutes before checking oil levels.

  2. Get an old rag or paper towel.

  3. Open the hood and look for the top of a dipstick labeled "ENGINE OIL".

  4. Pull out the dipstick. Your oil color should be light brown or honey colored.

  5. Look at the markings on the end of the stick. Usually "Full" and "Low".

  6. Re-insert the dipstick into it's slot. Make sure it goes in completely.

  7. Pull out the dipstick once more and look at the oil level.

  8. The top of the oil mark should come close to or be on the "Full" line.

Things To Keep In Mind:
• If your oil level is near or below the "Low" line, you need to add oil to your engine. • If your oil is black or dark in color, it is probably time for an oil change.
• Check owner's manuals or with an auto parts sales person for which oil to use.
• If your oil level drops quickly (daily, weekly) you may have a leak or your engine may be burning oil. Have a technician take a look.
